Getting fired can be a negative event or a positive one. I am sure you are aware of all the negatives; many people are restrained by these toxic thoughts immediately upon hearing the news. There are positive benefits of getting fired. For every disadvantage there is a seed of opportunity, you just need to find it.
1. You were fired
If it’s your first, there’s a first time for everything, congratulations! Some of the greatest successes were fired at one point in their lives: Steve Jobs, Henry Ford, Walt Disney, Oprah.
2. You are free from a terrible boss
Sometimes it’s a gift to get fired. Your level of stress was high lately because of your new boss from the depths of the deepest ocean. Those gray hairs are a result of working in a toxic environment. You are free from the tyrannical presence of a terrible boss.
3. You have time to build your business
You now have the opportunity to start building that business you have been thinking about. Maybe you do need a new job to sustain your family’s lifestyle, but in that period of transition you have the tremendous opportunity to take steps to build the business you always wanted. Start small with the extra time you have looking for your next career.
4. You have time to work on yourself
Those classes you always wanted to take, now is the time to enroll. Those skills you wanted to improve, now is the time to study and grow. Become better. It doesn’t really matter what to become better in, just start doing something to improve today. The amazing thing is that if you begin to improve in one aspect in your life, you build the self-confidence to work on another area of your life. And before you know it, your entire life begins to improve because you have become better. Don’t wish it were easier, wish you were better.
5. You have time to find your life’s purpose
A purposeless life is a worthless life. It doesn’t have the energy and passion you find in a purposeful life. It is amazing the feeling you have if you wake up everyday excited to get started. Like everyday is Christmas, you couldn’t wait until morning came as a child. When you have a purposeful life, you can live everyday with that level of enthusiasm.
6. You don’t have to spend one more second in that tiny cubicle
Nothing slows me down like the walls of a cubicle. Maybe you sacrificed your happiness for a steady paycheck. Now that you are fired, you are free from that constraining environment. You have the opportunity to find a job you will really enjoy. Maybe you might take a pay cut initially, but if you really enjoy it, you will put in the time and effort to become the very best at what you do. You can do it all day long. People pay the highest value to those who are the best at what they do.
7. You can change up your schedule
Maybe working 9:00 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon isn’t the best time for you. Maybe you like working at night, so find a job that is 8 PM to 4 AM. You will be surprised by what you find if you only search.
8. You can escape the rat race
Being stuck in the same routine and environment can develop a rut in your life. Now that you are fired, it is a wake up call for life change. Now that you are not blinded by the monotonous life you once had while working at that past job, you can really re-evaluate your life and begin a whole new one today.
9. You don’t have to be around any of your annoying co-workers
I am sure there were certain individuals at your past job that you did not particularly enjoy spending time with. Lucky for you, you never have to work with them again. Now you can find a new work environment, yes there are people you will not like at your next job, but at least you get a fresh perspective by being around different people.
10. You have more time for your family
With the extra time you have in transition, spend some quality time with your friends and family. Really get to know them better and listen to them. You don’t any meetings, conferences, or calls to worry about. You are now clear minded enough to really be present and listening when you are spending time with your friends and family.
11. You have more time to work out and become healthier
This is the perfect time to start up a new healthy plan. Begin working out. Start the new habits of being healthy today. You have extra time, build the habit now, so when you begin working again, it will already be a part of your lifestyle.
12. You don’t waste time building someone else’s dream
Mind your own business. When you work a job, you build someone else’s dream, when you build your business, you build your dreams. It’s time to begin what you always dreamed of accomplishing. When will now be the perfect time to try again? Never give up.
13. You have a gift, if you master that talent and sharpen your skill, you will always have money
People pay top dollar to those who are the best at what they do. When you love what you do, you will put in the time, effort, and sweat because you enjoy it. Merely doing what you love, you will become better through repetition. And once you are an expert, you will always be in demand.
14. You have time to read all the books you have held off for years
Go to the bookstore. Read something. Read something funny. Read something interesting. Read something exciting. Read something informative. Read something enlightening. Read anything. Begin to open your mind with the power of books. It is amazing how smart you become by reading a few books.
15. You have time to travel the world
You have a little money saved up. Take a trip. Don’t blow all your money though, just get out of town for a little. Even for a weekend. Drive 10 hours out of town, find a nice hotel, stay a couple nights. Anything to change up your old routine. It’s time to open your eyes and mind, activate your mind with a different environment.
16. You have time to create a future for yourself
Begin creating a plan for your future. Now is the time you aren’t distracted by the annoyances of your past career, you are free to design the future. Write it down. Write down all the things you would like. What do you really want? Create a plan to achieve the goals and work the plan. By the inch it’s a cinch, by the yard it’s hard.
17. Learn from it
It might be tough medicine to swallow, getting fired. But in 10 years from now, you will probably look back on this time and think, “Man, if I never got fired from that job, I wouldn’t be living the life I live today. I changed my life after I got fired from that job. Now I live the life of my dreams.” Don’t go to the bar and try to drink away the pain. Wake up. This event could be the greatest thing to happen to you. Today it is tragic, tomorrow it could be the catalyst that revolutionized your life for the better.
Keep your head up and learn from it.
To your success!
